Where we work in St. Petersburg
We design homes throughout the city: Snell Isle, Old Northeast, Shore Acres, Bayou Grande, Brightwaters and the condominiums downtown. Our portfolio holds six homes here, from a Snell Isle dining room in deep navy to a Brightwaters kitchen built around an arched window.
The city's houses run from 1920s bungalows to downtown condos, and no two are alike. Michelle designs for each one's architecture and light as much as for the people who live there.
Beyond the beachy look
St. Petersburg homes deserve more than the typical beachy look. Michelle calls her approach warm minimalism: edited, comfortable rooms in which every piece is chosen with purpose. She often begins with the art, pairing bold wall color with striking original work, and her own word for the result is balance. One Old Northeast living room was composed in soft curves and organic textures, with a palette drawn from nature.
St. Pete Life magazine profiled Michelle and this way of working in Beyond Coastal, a feature in its January/February 2025 issue.
Renovations, kitchens and finished rooms
Many of the city's older houses are full of character and short on function. For a renovation, we lay out a systematic plan through flooring, tile, plumbing fixtures and lighting, then design the kitchens, baths, built-ins and custom furniture to suit. One St. Petersburg built-in was designed around the clients' art collection.
For furnishing, Michelle presents the options and the studio handles ordering, tracking, receiving and returns. All of the furniture is delivered on one day under her direction. The art is hung and the accessories are placed, so you come home to rooms that are complete.
A designer who knows the city
Michelle is a design graduate of the University of Florida's College of Architecture and an Allied Member of ASID. She worked with interior design firms in the region before founding MJ Designs in 2004, and the studio has been named Best of Houzz for design in nine years between 2014 and 2023. As a third-generation resident, she also knows St. Petersburg itself: its history, its neighborhoods, its restaurants, museums and galleries, and its schools, and she is glad to share them with clients who are new to the city.
Starting a project
Every project begins with a complimentary discovery call by Zoom, in which Michelle listens and comes to know how you live and what your home needs. From there we plan the rooms, present every selection for your approval and see the work through to installation. Read about our process.
Send an inquiry or call the studio at 727-688-0652 to talk about your St. Petersburg home.
